Characteristics: 

Nanoscale materials and intermediates are used in apparel to provide several different performance-enhancing capabilities. The following properties can be acheived with the addition of the nanoscale materials listed:

  • Antimicrobial / anti-odor: metallic, silver nanoparticles or ceramic, titanium dioxide nanoparticles exposed to UV light
  • Stain protection / water repellence: copolymer nanoparticles or nanofibers or ceramic, TiO2 nanoparticles exposed to UV light
  • Moisture management (i.e., wicking, breathable): copolymer nanoparticles or nanofibers
  • UV protection: ceramic, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide nanoparticles
  • Flame resistance: ceramic, clay or silicon dioxide nanoparticles
  • Static protection: ceramic, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide nanoparticles
  • Wrinke resistance: ceramic, titanium dioxide nanoparticles
  • Luminescence: polymeric nanolayers
  • Fragrance / controlled release: polymer nanoshells
  • Anti-counterfeit: magnetic nanoparticles
