This category includes entities that receive public and/or private funding to conduct technical or social research in areas related to nanotechnology.

Characteristics:

Research centers often receive government funding to support the discovery of new fundamental technologies that will enable new product development or to collect and analyze new information pertaining to environmental, social and economic concerns. In other cases they receive more targeted funding to develop new products for defense or military applications. Government-funded centers are often located at universities or public-use facilities.
