Description:

The Berkeley Nanosciences and Nanoengineering Institute (BNNI) is the umbrella organization for expanding and coordinating Berkeley research and educational activities in nanoscale science and engineering.

One of the NIH Nanomedicine Development Centers, the Optical Control of Biological Function, is at UC-Berkeley. The center was originally funded in 2006, and it is one of the four continuing centers.

Students involved in nano-related research from business, science, engineering and law participate in the Berkeley Nanotechnology Club. The Berkeley Nanotechnology Club fosters and promotes information exchange and entrepreneurship opportunities for Berkeley students and alumni in the San Francisco Bay Area.

One program by the BNNI is the Capitol Science Program, which is designed to enhance the understanding of science of the members of the California Legislature and California State Agencies. The program has begun its work with a series of meetings with members of the Political Science Department and Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, and with representatives of California government.
