Catalytic Solutions

Company Background and Structure

Catalytic Solutions is a global manufacturer and distributor of emissions control systems and catalytic products for commercial and industrial applications. The company was founded in 1996, and in May 2010, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Clean Diesel Technologies (3). The company’s structure has two major divisions: the heavy-duty diesel division, operated by Catalytic Solutions’ subsidiary company Engine Control Systems, and the catalyst division. Catalytic Solutions manufactures its nanostructured catalysts at its main facility in Oxnard, California, and their products are most commonly applied to automobile, diesel engine, and energy markets. CSI investors have included RockPort Capital, the SAM Group (Zurich, Switzerland) and Presidio Venture Partners (a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation)(3; 5).

Position in the Nanotechnology Value Chain

Catalytic Solutions utilizes a vertically integrated process, thereby serving as a manufacturer of nanoscale materials, nanoscale intermediates, and nano-enabled components alike. The company produces patented mixed-metal oxides and incorporates them into their proprietary and cost-effective Mixed Phase Catalyst (MPC) technology to produce nano-enabled coatings for use in emission control catalysts. They have also developed their own unique manufacturing process to apply the nano-enabled coatings to substrates and form high performance catalytic converters and other emissions control systems for use in end-market products within the fuel and energy industries.

Buyers and Products

As a major division of Clean Diesel Technologies’ product line, the company provides a range of products from customized catalysts to fully develop emission reduction systems incorporating the nano-enabled technologies. In 2004, the company had products in mass production for Honda, General Motors and Ford (5). The catalysts are also sold to heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturers, including Catalytic Solutions’ own diesel division. Further, the company targets buyers within the energy sector who can use their technologies to reduce the harmful effects of air pollution created by major industrial sources. CSI developed the breakthrough proprietary Mixed Phase Catalyst technology which reduces converter costs by utilizing up to 90% less precious metals than a conventional catalytic coating technology (3).
